Good Eats on the Uruguayan Coast
Posted by admin on March 17, 2010
Today’s blog post is going to be a brief run down of a few excellent eats on the Uruguayan coast (at least some of my favorite things to eat). And without further delay, some classic dishes from Punta del Diablo:
1) Bunuelos de Alga (Seaweed fritters):
These are little fried pieces of heaven. A soft batter made with pieces of local seaweed from the playa. For about 50 pesos ($2.50 USD) you can get a paper bag with about 20 little bunuelos and a slice of lemon. Fun fact, in order to make the seaweed edible, it needs to be washed three times in boiling water.
2) Pascualina:
Pascualina is a savory tart that is made with spinach, eggs, garlic, and various other vegetables. This dish is divided into individual slices and makes a perfect light afternoon lunch. The eggs are put into a whole made in the pie before it is baked, so that the eggs have the appearance of hard boiled eggs.
3) Empanadas del Mar:
There are many types of empanadas in Latin America: sweet, fruity, meat, pizza, ect. However, a real treat are the seafood empanadas from Punta del Diablo. Here you’ll find mussel, fish, fish with olives, and fish with cheese empanadas. These last empanadas, fish and cheese, sound interesting, but may be my favorite. Warning, the mussel empanadas are JUICY, but very delicious.
All of these dishes can be found here in Punta del Diablo and are relatively inexpensive. The best place to look for these are at the boardwark on Playa de los Pescadores or near the bus station of Rutas del Sol. Yet another way to enhance your cultural experience when staying at El Diablo Tranquilo.
Buen Provecho,
Jarrrrri
